KMH Environmental partnered with Apple and Pear Australia Limited (APAL) and was supported by a Federal Government Energy Efficiency Information Grant (EEIG) to deliver a national, fact based, practical learning program to assist Australia’s apple, pear, summerfruit and cherry industry (known as the Temperate Fruit industry). The “Watts in your Business” program helped APAL members to understand how to reduce energy use and operating costs, improve process productivity, profitability and competitiveness for growers and processors. While undertaking 30 representative energy audits across five states KMH identified over 5.5GWh of annual energy improvement opportunities representing a saving of approximately $1 million in energy costs to the industry.
One APAL member to volunteer to participate in the program was Radevski Coolstores in Shepparton, Victoria. Radevski Coolstores is a cold storage and pack house facility covering over 16,000m2 and containing 16 independent cool rooms. The KMH audit complemented the initiatives Radevski had already implemented in 2013 which included ammonia refrigerant replacing HCFC as the refrigerant gas and the installation on variable speed drives on the refrigeration system. Further initiatives identified in the KMH audit and later adopted by the facility were LED lighting upgrades, fast sliding automatic doors for the cool rooms, voltage power optimisation and the installation of a Solar PV system to assist in offsetting grid electricity usage especially in the peak summer months.
The energy efficiency and reduction initiatives adopted by Radevski Coolstores were formally recognised at the National Horticulture Convention held in conjunction with AusVeg and APAL on the Gold Coast recently. Peter Radevski was awarded the APAL Environmental Award.
KMH Environmental would like to congratulate Radevski Coolstores for this award and for recognising the benefits to their business of implementing energy efficient equipment and control at their Shepparton facilities. Our congratulations also go out to all award recipients recognised at the convention. Details can be found at http://apal.org.au/apals-2015-award-winners-applepear-industry-announced.
KMH is proud to be associated with Apple and Pear Australia Limited and looks forward to continuing to support their members with their energy efficiency and energy productivity initiatives.
