Option Analysis and Selection

Option comparison can be applied to either linear or fixed infrastructure and can be used to:

• Locate a site given an array of desirable attributes;
• Compare the performance of previously determined site / route options.

The process should incorporate a range of qualitative and quantitative information and at is simplest can be prepared in the form of a planning balance sheet or scorecard so that performance can be compared between options.

More complex quantitative procedures involving ‘weighting’ individual environmental issues can also be developed through workshopping with project stakeholders.

GIS tools can also be used to analyse large amounts of data or large geographic areas and at a minimum to present visually the identified constraints relative to the options investigated.
